Carpenter Guide

Studs, joists, doors and the trim that finishes a room are carpentry, and any member that carries load needs the building class checked before it is cut.

Or see carpenters near you

  • ABN checked when a business has one on the listing.
  • 8400 published carpenter listings in Australia.
  • Separate structural carpentry from doors, skirtings and other finish work.

How it works

  1. Split structure from trim

Say whether a joist, lintel or roof member changes, or whether the work is doors and skirtings only. Those two descriptions lead to different classes on the register.

  2. Show the timber you have

Photos of rot, a bouncy floor and an out-of-square reveal tell more than a room name. Mention notches a plumber has already made.

  3. Then confirm, then cut

When the task is structural carpentry, read the state register for the class that fits before a saw meets a load-bearing member.

Services

  • Framing changes

Studs, noggings, lintels and joists when an opening or a wall has to move.

  • Doors and trim

Hanging leaves, scribing architraves, and fixing skirtings against walls that are not straight.

  • Decks and outside timber

Bearers, joists, posts and decking boards, including the hardware that holds the frame true.

  • Stairs

Treads, strings and landings where timber has worn, split or been altered by an earlier renovation.

  • Fixing for the next trade

Packing reveals and adding noggings so plaster sheets and joinery land on a fair surface.

What a carpenter does

Carpenters set out timber so later trades have something square to follow. Structural work means bearers, joists, studs, noggings, lintels over openings, and roofs put up in stick or truss. Finish work means doors, jambs, skirtings, architraves, scribed ends against a wall that is out of square, and the packers that make a reveal look even. A deck, a pergola or a stair change often begins as this craft and then meets a building class once the piece carries more than its own weight. Measure the opening twice and say who supplies the timber, the hardware, and the posts. A sketch with widths stops a trim visit being booked as framing. Put those widths on the paper you send ahead.

Ask which members are replaced and which stay, especially where rot, borers or an old renovation has notched a joist for a pipe. The sequence matters: flashings and sheets need framing that is actually there, so the waterproofer and the plasterer are not guessing. Cabinets sprayed in a workshop are joinery; the person on site may scribe them to the wall without having made the doors. A shelf or a curtain rod is a small brief. Changing how a roof or a wall carries load is structural carpentry, and that class belongs on the state register before cutting starts. Bring a photo of the existing joint or the rotten board. The carpenter can then say whether the repair stops at that piece or continues into the frame.

When you need a licensed carpenter

Structural carpentry in New South Wales is something to confirm on the NSW Fair Trading register, including whether a wider building class is the one that actually fits the opening.

See whether structural carpentry is a registered class with the Building and Plumbing Commission carpentry entries before a Victorian lintel is swapped.

In Queensland, structural carpentry is checked on the QBCC licensee register rather than assumed because someone owns a nail gun.

South Australian structural carpentry is read on the Consumer and Business Services search before a load-bearing member is cut.

Western Australian structural carpentry belongs on the Building and Energy search, matched to the class name rather than the signwriting on the ute.

CBOS is the Tasmanian agency; its tradesperson search should be read for structural carpentry before framing is altered.

Australian Capital Territory construction registers published by Access Canberra are where a structural carpentry class is verified.

On the Northern Territory building practitioner register, see whether structural carpentry appears before a business card is treated as enough.

What changes the price

  • Work over a stair void, on a steep block, or inside a furnished room changes the hours on the tools.
  • Hardwood the owner insists on follows a different supply path from the pine usually stacked for framing.
  • Engineering notes for a beam or a lintel are a compliance step a skirting swap does not need.
  • An urgent make-safe after wind damage is scheduled differently from a deck frame with a booked start.
  • Night hours in an occupied house are a different pattern from daylight on an empty site.
  • Mud, nowhere to leave the ute, or a rear yard with no side passage are conditions the visit has to absorb.
  • Opening a lining and finding a notched joist changes a scope that was written from a photo.

Hiring checklist

  • Bearers, joists, studs or lintels being replaced are listed, not grouped as the single word framing.
  • Doors, jambs, skirtings and scribed architraves are included or excluded in words.
  • Timber species, and who buys it, is stated.
  • Structural changes are flagged so the building class can be confirmed before cutting.
  • You have agreed the pause if rot or an old notch appears inside a wall.
  • Floors, benches and garden beds that must stay unmarked are described.
  • Deck posts, hangers and fasteners are named rather than left as hardware.
  • The carpenter has said whether cabinets come from a workshop or are built here.
  • Offcuts, nails in the grass and packing are part of the pack-up.
  • A start window, and which rooms you cannot use, is plain.

Questions to ask

  • Are studs, lintels and joists sized on the page, or only described as framing?
  • Who supplies the timber, and who orders hangers and brackets?
  • If rot shows once cladding comes off, does the saw stop for a new scope?
  • Is this structural carpentry that needs a building class, or finish work only?
  • How are architraves, skirtings and scribed ends included?
  • Will floors be protected and offcuts taken away?

Common questions

How do I check a carpenter?

Open the building or occupational register for the state. Structural carpentry may sit under a carpentry class or under a builder class. Finish work such as skirtings may be treated differently. Read the class against the members being cut, and do not stop at a business name.

What should a carpentry quote include?

Which members change, the species, who buys timber and hardware, what is finish work, how floors are protected, and what happens if the wall is worse than the photo. A deck quote should name posts and fixings.

Is hanging one door the same class as moving a lintel?

No. A door and architraves can be finish carpentry. A lintel, a joist or a roof member that carries load is structural carpentry, and that is the moment to confirm the class on the state register.

Do carpenters build kitchens?

They may fit and scribe cabinets. Making the doors in a workshop is joinery. Say which of those you want, or you will compare a site-fix price with a manufactured kitchen.

What is not carpentry?

Waterproofing a wet area, electrical circuits, and solid plaster are other trades. A carpenter can pack a wall so those trades have a straight base. That packing is not a substitute for their licences.
